  • Untitled 2 (Face with Seam) 2015, mixed media on canvas, 31.5x24 "

This mixed media piece by Juan Roberto Diago ("Diago"), like many of his works, makes reference to his Afro-Cuban roots and the fact that even in Cuba, blacks have less power, and less of a voice, than the mostly white power structure. Thus many of his "black" faces, which evoke African masks, have no mouths.

  • Untitled (Barcos en el Horizonte), mixed media on wood, 2009, 31x47"

This extraordinary piece by Roberto Diago ("Diago") makes reference to the African/Yoruba deity Yemaya who rules over the oceans and is the much worshipped patron saint of Havana's port. The ocean is also a likely reference to the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the vestiges of slavery in Cuba, a common theme in the artist's work. Found wood is one of the materials frequently employed by Diago, representing the poverty of materials available for many Cubans, especially Cubans of color. As a young artist during Cuba's critical "special period" when art supplies were nonexistent, he  himself used to scavenge for found materials in the streets of Havana.

  • El Monte, Studio #1, mixed media on canvas, 2007, 25.5 x39.5"

This collage painting by Juan Roberto Diago Durruthy straddles the border between the abstract and the representative. It suggests a tropical landscape (Cuba?) with a palm grove. The painting's title might also be a reference to Santería, widely practiced across the island.

Cuba:Roberto Diago ("Diago")

Juan Roberto Diago Durruthy ("Diago") was born and raised in Havana (b 1971). Today he is one of Cuba's foremost contemporary artists whose works are included in private and public collections worldwide. Diago's works often  reference Afro-Cuban religions and frequently channel Cuba's legacy of slavery, calling attention to the disadvantages Afro-Cubans continue to face in contemporary Cuba. Christie's has called Diago "critically and commercially Cuba's most successful artist". He has had numerous group and solo shows across the United States, Europe and elsewhere.
