  • Me Quedo, mixed media on paper, 2008

This piece makes reference to the fact that until fairly recently, Cubans could not own their homes (it was all government property), and therefore could not buy or sell them. Instead, houses, apartments or rooms were swapped, with people advertising on informal bulletin boards what they had to offer and what they were looking for instead. The posted notices usually bore the heading “se permuta” (I am willing to swap). The man in this ironic piece has reviewed all the offers of the day and decided to stay put ("me quedo").

Cuba: Luis Alberto Copperi

Luis Alberto Pérez Copperi (“Copperi), born 1973, lives and works in Cienfuegos as an independent artist. He has degrees in fine arts and architecture. His works on paper frequently show scenes or aspects of Cuban life combining the ordinary with the surreal. His monochromatic or colored drawings narrate his Cuban world, one that is limited by geography but without limits psychologically, politically or spiritually. His ideas are strong and and at times confrontational, yet they are presented with a gentleness that reflects his personality. In recent years he has had a number of solo and group shows in Cuba and abroad, including a solo show in Sonoma, California. Today Copperi’s works are included in private collections in Cuba, Mexico, South America, the United States, Canada and Europe.
