    Group of “Nó-de-Pinho” hardwood carvings depicting Christian saints, Vale de Paraíba, São Paulo, Brazil. These carvings/amulets are small (2.5-4.5 inches) and extremely rare. They were made by captured Africans on Brazilian coffee plantations in the 18th/19th century when forced by their masters to manifest their Christian faith by depicting images of Catholic saints (usually Santo Antonio). Despite the subject, the aesthetic is African.
