  • Exodus, Clay Sculpture by Neide, Caruaru, Pernambuco
This beautiful piece depicts a typical scene from Brazil's impoverished rural Northeast where draught and famine have destroyed farmland and livestock, causing a mass migration of people from this region to Brazil's cities and better employment opportunities. Poor farmers or sharecroppers pack up their belongings and abandon their land.

Brazilian Folk Art/Selt-Taught Artists

MARIPOSA has one of the most unusual and diverse collection of Brazilian folk arts and works by self-taught Brazilian artists in North America. It includes a vast collection of unique, authentic ex-voto sculptures, Afro-Brazilian metal sculptures, stunning works by traditional cordel (woodblock) artists, many dramatic, three-dimensional works by Nino, Manuel Graziano, José Adario dos Santos, Raimundo Borges Falcão and others, paintings by Heitor dos Prazeres and other "naifs", and prints and woodblocks by J. Borges. Other Brazilian folk art forms, including antique and contemporary mamulengo puppets by known (e.g. by Indio Joel) are also featured.
