José Antonio da Silva was born (1921) and died (1973) in Alto do Moura, near Caruaru, Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. Nicknamed Zé Caboclo, he became one of the most admired artists of Caruaru, a village known for its folk artists working with clay which included the world-famous Mestre Vitalino. He invented new techniques and forms, adopting the use of wire in the structure of the sculptures and bulging instead of inset eyes. Today his works are included in private and public collections throughout Brazil and world-wide.

  • Retirantes Exodus, Clay Sculpture by Neide, Caruaru, Pernambuco
This beautiful piece depicts a typical scene from Brazil's impoverished rural Northeast where draught and famine have destroyed farmland and livestock, causing a mass migration of people from this region to Brazil's cities and better employment opportunities. Poor farmers or sharecroppers pack up their belongings and abandon their land.

Brazil: Folk Art/Selt-Taught Artists

MARIPOSA has one of the most unusual and diverse collection of Brazilian folk arts and works by self-taught Brazilian artists in North America. It includes a large collection of unique, authentic ex-voto sculptures; Afro-Brazilian metal sculptures; stunning works by traditional cordel (woodblock) artists; clay sculptures by several of the masters of Alto da Moura (Caruaru); dramatic, three-dimensional works by Nino (João Cosme Felix), Manuel Graziano, José Adario dos Santos, Raimundo Borges Falcão and others; paintings by Heitor dos Prazeres, Chico (Francisco) da Silva and other "naifs"; and prints and woodblocks by J. Borges. Other Brazilian folk art forms, including antique and contemporary mamulengo puppets by known (e.g. by Indio Joel) are also featured.
