MARIPOSA has one of the most unusual and diverse collection of Brazilian folk arts and works by self-taught Brazilian artists in North America. It includes a vast collection of unique, authentic ex-voto sculptures, Afro-Brazilian metal sculptures, stunning works by traditional cordel (woodblock) artists, many dramatic, three-dimensional works by Nino, Manuel Graziano, Chico Tabibuia, José Adario dos Santos and others, and prints and woodblocks by J. Borges. Other traditional Brazilian folk art forms, including antique and contemporary mamulengo puppets by known (e.g. by Indio Joel) and unknown artists, “naif” paintings and folk toys are also represented.
